Stewed Apples

Trust me, this is the most delicious snack...naturally sweet, versatile, nutritious and nourishing for gut health.

How to make stewed apples

  • You need:

  • 6-8 Bramley apples
  • ½ cup of water
  • 2 tsp cinnamon (I use a sprinkle of mixed spice & all spice)
  • Optional: vanilla, cloves, star anise, 1/2 cup sultans/raisins
  • Method

  • 1
Peel and core the apples and chop into small pieces (leave skin on if you can tolerate them)
  • 2
Put all the ingredients into a heavy based pot and cook for approx. 15mins.
  • 3
Stirring regularly. Cook until soft/mushy. Colour should be russet brown with the cinnamon effect.
  • 4
Put into small containers, cover and store in the fridge for use.

It can be eaten on its own, but why not add some of these:

  • 1 tsp of probiotic stirred into apple (open capsule)
  • 2/3 tbsp natural coconut yogurt or 0% fat Greek yoghurt (for protein)
  • Some berries +/or some crushed nuts
  • Coconut or almond flakes (slightly toasted on a pan)
  • 1 tsp of Manuka or wild honey if required

For healing purposes, consume at least 1 portion per day.

Why should you eat stewed apples?

There are many reasons why you should include this as part of your diet:

  • The skin on Bramley apples has a supportive role in our gut health.
  • The pectin acts as a prebiotic, feeding our 'good' bacteria in the large intestine. It also has a protective effect on the cells of our gut lining.
  • Apples have a wonderful effect on regular bowel movement.
  • Apples / pears are inversely associated allergies & intolerances, such as rhinitis, asthma and atopic sensitisation. The more you eat of these foods the better equipped your immune system is to handle the antigen exposure.
  • Apples, through their polyphenolic compounds, are involved in controlling inflammation. They protect the tissues of the intestines from damage. As well as helping regulate the immune system and how it responds.
  • Cinnamon is anti-inflammatory and helps keep blood sugar levels balanced, counteracting the sweetness from the apples and raisins.

Aim for organic as they have a greater nutrient content. If this is tricky, soak apples in baking soda & water. This may remove chemicals on the skin, which are associated with chronic diseases.
